TAVI in London & Essex | Dr Cook

What is a TAVI?

TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) is a revolutionary, minimally invasive treatment for severe aortic stenosis. This condition occurs when the heart’s aortic valve becomes narrowed and stiff, restricting vital blood flow to the rest of the body.

How the TAVI Procedure Works

Unlike traditional open-heart surgery, a TAVI procedure does not require opening the chest or using a general anaesthetic. Instead, a new heart valve is delivered via a thin, flexible tube called a catheter—usually through a small incision in the groin (the femoral artery).

Once precisely positioned inside your existing valve, the new valve is expanded into place. It immediately takes over the work of the old valve, restoring normal blood flow and relieving symptoms such as breathlessness and chest pain

Benefits & Recovery in London & Essex

Because TAVI is a "keyhole" heart procedure, recovery is typically significantly faster than with surgical valve replacement:

  • Rapid Mobility: Most patients are awake and mobile within just a few hours.

  • Shorter Hospital Stay: Patients are often safe to return home within one or two days.

  • Proven Results: TAVI is an established, evidence-based treatment that offers a high-quality alternative to surgery for many patients.

Why would I be offered a TAVI?

You may be a candidate for TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) if you have been diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis. I recommend this minimally invasive valve replacement when the narrowing of your heart valve begins to impact your quality of life or place significant strain on your heart muscle.

Recognising the Symptoms for Valve Intervention

Treatment is typically recommended when you experience "warning signs" of heart valve disease, such as:

  • Breathlessness: Feeling short of breath during daily walks or exertion.

  • Chest Discomfort (Angina): Tightness or pressure in the chest.

  • Dizziness or Light-headedness: Particularly when standing or active.

  • Reduced Exercise Capacity: Finding that you are "slowing down" more than usual.

Who is TAVI Suitable For?

TAVI is an excellent, evidence-based alternative to open-heart surgery. It is particularly suitable for patients where a less invasive approach is preferable due to age, overall health, or previous medical history. The goal of replacing the valve is to achieve a significant improvement in your symptoms, quality of life, and long-term heart health.

Specialist TAVI Assessment & Heart Team Review

Before proceeding with a TAVI procedure, you will undergo a comprehensive specialist assessment to ensure the best possible outcome. This includes:

  • Echocardiography: A detailed heart ultrasound to measure valve narrowing.

  • Specialised Cardiac CT Scan: Used to provide a "blueprint" for planning your TAVI procedure.

  • Multidisciplinary Heart Team Review: Your case is personally reviewed by a team of valve experts to ensure your treatment plan is bespoke and tailored specifically to your anatomy.

What are the benefits and risks?

The Benefits of TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation)

For patients with severe aortic stenosis, a TAVI procedure (also known as TAVR) offers a life-changing alternative to traditional open-heart surgery. The primary benefits include:

  • Rapid Relief from Symptoms: Significant improvement in breathlessness, chest pain, and dizzy spells.

  • Minimally Invasive: Performed via a small incision in the groin (keyhole), avoiding the need for a large chest incision.

  • Faster Recovery Time: Most patients are mobile within 24 hours and return home after a short hospital stay.

  • Improved Life Expectancy: Restoring healthy blood flow to the heart and the rest of the body.

  • No Heart-Lung Machine: Unlike surgical valve replacement, TAVI is performed while the heart is beating.

Understanding the Risks of the TAVI Procedure

While TAVI is a highly successful and common heart valve repair, all medical interventions carry some level of risk. While serious complications such as stroke, vascular damage, or the need for a permanent pacemaker are uncommon, they can occur.

The exact risks vary significantly between individuals based on their age, heart anatomy, and overall health.

Your Personalised Heart Team Assessment

During your specialist cardiology consultation, I will provide a detailed and personalised assessment of your likely benefits and risks. Every TAVI case is reviewed by a Multi-Disciplinary Heart Team to ensure this is the safest and most effective approach for your specific situation.

We prioritises shared decision-making, providing you and your family with clear, evidence-based information to make informed decisions with total confidence.
