Mitral Regurgitation Assessment in Essex & London | Dr Cook
What is mitral regurgitation?
Mitral regurgitation is a common condition where the mitral valve—one of the primary valves inside the heart—does not close properly. This allows blood to leak backwards with each heartbeat, forcing the heart muscle to work significantly harder to pump blood efficiently around the body.
Recognising the Symptoms of a Leaky Mitral Valve
In the early stages, many people feel completely well. In fact, mitral regurgitation is often discovered incidentally during a routine physical examination or a heart scan for another reason. When symptoms do develop, they often appear so gradually that they are easy to dismiss or adapt to.
A helpful way to assess your heart health is to compare your current activity levels with how you felt a year or two ago. You might ask yourself:
Are you becoming more short of breath with everyday tasks?
Do you feel more tired or fatigued than usual?
Have family or friends noticed you seem less energetic or more breathless during activity?
The Importance of Early Cardiac Assessment
Because the heart can often compensate for a leaky valve for a long time, subtle changes in your energy levels or breathing should not be ignored. Recognizing these shifts early allows for a timely specialist assessment and, where necessary, the appropriate treatment to protect your heart function.
At my clinics in Essex and London, I provide expert diagnostic testing and personalised care plans for valvular heart disease. Identifying mitral regurgitation early ensures we can monitor the condition and intervene at the optimal time to achieve the best long-term outcomes.
What symptoms can mitral regurgitation cause?
As mitral regurgitation (a leaky mitral valve) becomes more significant, it begins to affect how efficiently the heart pumps blood. This can lead to fluid build-up in the lungs or long-term strain on the heart muscle, presenting as a variety of physical symptoms.
Common Signs of a Leaky Mitral Valve
If you are concerned about your heart health, look for these common indicators of mitral valve dysfunction:
Breathlessness on Exertion: Feeling unusually short of breath during daily walks or exercise.
Orthopnoea: Difficulty breathing specifically when lying flat.
Heart Palpitations: An awareness of a racing, fluttering, or irregular heartbeat.
Fatigue & Reduced Stamina: Finding that you are "slowing down" or more easily tired than usual.
Physical Swelling: Noticing ankle swelling (oedema) or a persistent cough.
Why Mitral Symptoms Should Not Be Ignored
Even if your symptoms seem mild or intermittent, they are important to discuss with a heart valve specialist. If mitral regurgitation is left unmanaged as it progresses, it can eventually lead to changes in heart size (enlargement), reduced pumping function, and rhythm problems like Atrial Fibrillation.
Monitoring Condition Progression
If you have already received a diagnosis of mitral regurgitation, any worsening of your symptoms or a noticeable change in your activity level should prompt a specialist review.
At my clinics I provide expert cardiac assessments to monitor valve health and determine the most appropriate timing for treatment to protect your long-term heart function.
How is mitral regurgitation assessed?
Your journey to a clear diagnosis begins with a detailed clinical consultation. We will discuss your symptoms, changes in your activity levels, and how your heart health has evolved. This is followed by a focused physical examination at my clinics in Essex or London.
Specialist Cardiac Investigations for Mitral Leakage
The definitive test for diagnosing and monitoring mitral regurgitation is an Echocardiogram (a specialist ultrasound scan of the heart). This allows us to accurately measure:
Valve Leakage: The severity and volume of the regurgitation.
Heart Chamber Size: Whether the heart is beginning to enlarge (dilatation).
Overall Heart Function: How well the heart muscle is pumping.
Depending on your symptoms, a 12-lead ECG and specialist blood tests may also be required to provide a comprehensive view of your cardiac health.
Advanced Imaging & Procedural Planning
If further detail is required—particularly when planning for minimally invasive valve repair—I utilise world-class imaging technology:
Cardiac MRI: Offering the most precise assessment of heart muscle health and volume.
Specialist Echocardiography: Including 3D imaging to better understand complex valve anatomy.
Cardiac CT: Used to provide a detailed anatomical "blueprint" when planning interventions.
Modern Treatments: Mitral TEER & Valve Repair
By combining your clinical symptoms with advanced imaging results, I develop a personalised management plan. This may involve regular "watchful waiting" with monitoring, medical therapy, or a discussion regarding valve repair.
Modern advancements mean that many patients can now be treated effectively using Mitral TEER (Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair), also known as ‘MitraClip’ or ‘Pascal’. This is a minimally invasive option that allows for valve repair without the need for traditional open-heart surgery. My priority is clear communication and shared decision-making, ensuring you feel supported and confident throughout your care.
