Coronary angioplasty care in London & Essex | Dr Cook
What is Coronary Angioplasty (Heart Stent Surgery)?
Coronary angioplasty, also known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or simply "stenting," is a highly effective, minimally invasive procedure. It is used to treat narrowed or blocked heart arteries, a condition known as coronary artery disease.
How the Procedure Works
Unlike open-heart surgery, angioplasty is a keyhole treatment:
Access: A thin, flexible tube (catheter) is passed through an artery in the wrist or groin and guided to the heart.
Opening the Blockage: A small balloon is inflated to widen the narrowed section of the artery.
Stent Insertion: A permanent metal mesh tube, called a heart stent, is placed to keep the artery open.
This restores healthy blood flow to the heart muscle and is an excellent option for relieving symptoms like chest pain (angina) or breathlessness when medication alone is not enough.
Recovery and Benefits
Because the procedure is performed under local anaesthetic without the need for major surgery, the recovery is remarkably fast:
Rapid Mobilisation: Most patients are able to sit up and walk within hours.
Same-Day Discharge: Many patients return home the same day.
Minimally Invasive: No large incisions, leading to less discomfort and a quicker return to normal life.
Why would I be offered Coronary Angioplasty (Heart Stent)?
Indications for Treatment
You may be a candidate for coronary angioplasty if diagnostic tests identify a significant narrowing or blockage in the coronary arteries. This procedure is typically recommended if you are experiencing:
Chest pain or discomfort (angina).
Shortness of breath (breathlessness).
Reduced exercise tolerance or stamina.
Angioplasty may also be recommended following a heart attack or if cardiac imaging shows reduced blood flow to a specific part of the heart muscle.
A Personalised Cardiology Assessment
Before proceeding with a heart stent procedure, I conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your heart health. This includes a detailed review of your medical history, symptoms, and coronary imaging results.
To ensure the best possible outcome, your case is reviewed by a Specialist Heart Team. We work together to determine if angioplasty is the most effective way to restore blood flow or if alternative treatments—such as cardiac medication or coronary artery bypass surgery—are more suitable for your specific anatomy.
Our Goal: Tailored Heart Care
The primary aim of treatment is to improve your quality of life by reducing symptoms and protecting your heart function. Every treatment plan is uniquely tailored to your individual needs and health profile.
What are the Benefits and Risks of Coronary Angioplasty and Stenting?
Benefits of a Heart Stent Procedure
Opening a narrowed or blocked artery with a coronary stent can significantly improve your heart health and daily function. Key benefits of angioplasty and stenting include:
Relief from Chest Pain: Rapid improvement of angina and discomfort.
Improved Exercise Capacity: Enhanced stamina and ability to stay active.
Enhanced Quality of Life: Restoring blood flow to the heart muscle for better overall wellbeing.
Fast Recovery: A minimally invasive alternative to surgery, usually requiring only a short hospital stay and a quick return to normal activities.
Understanding the Risks of Angioplasty
While coronary angioplasty is a common and highly successful procedure, it is important to be aware of potential risks. While serious complications such as a heart attack or stroke are uncommon, they can occur.
The specific risks for each patient vary based on their individual heart anatomy and overall health profile.
A Personalised Approach to Heart Care
